Volunteering in the field... Literally.

So the main pout of us staying here in Mimiwhangata is for us to volunteer with the department of conservation, working to appeal to the authorities in keeping the working farm of DOC running at an acceptable standard in terms of land preservation and habitat provision amongst many other things. We have been pulled in to help plant trees among many of the river banks in the farm to stabilise them, provide a barrier to cattle, and corridors to the sea for various bird - including here the Brown Teal - and endangered duck species, and the kiwi! After being treated by Becky to a face plant into a boggy swamp puddle area attempting to catch a frisbee, We worked hard all morning planting some of the 6000 trees planned for the week - both manuka and hanuka plants. Muddy shovels, sweaty palms and one or two breaks and we were told to enjoy the rest of the afternoon, but not before I had to help move the farmers pick up truck back down the track (as he was In the tractor, out leader in the van, and my American companions - monkeys when using manual cars! With gorgeous sunshine and clear skies, we were invited by the "Lone" ranger Chris to shadow him herding in the cows with canine companion, the Huntaway Jack! It was so. Interesting to see how the both worked the land and cattle, over such glorious and gorgeous land, viewing down from the headlands across the bays and out to the ocean. After hiking up and down the hills and back to do this, and with no running water for a shower - what better way to wash down than with an early evening dip into the pacific ocean, "Togs on!" and off we went. Seeming to be much warmer then slightly further south, near Auckland, none of us regretted the swim, and we all felt quite refreshed after. A wonderful day was then finished off by super chef team including myself and the wonderful chrissi and Russell. A veggie Thai red curry, and chicken Thai green curry both accompanied with rice were ideal to finish off the day! ! ! Time to go to the dunny and get an early night!!
