Rangitoto and the Amazing Auckland Race!!
Another early start saw us leaving the hostel to head for a 7:30am ferry to local Rangitoto Island. Formed through volcanic action 600 years ago as one of the most recent members of the Auckland volcanic field, if provides and incredible hike to the crater summit for stunning views back over the harbour, and out across the various other islands and bays,After almost missing the ferry whilst our guide attempted to find a parking space, struggling with the van height and an argument or two with pier supervisors, security and ticket salesmen, we were on the boat and headed across the harbour. This was a STUNNING boat trip of only 20 minutes, accompanied by a glorious sunrise.Reaching the island, we were told by our guide that one "Never regrets a winter, ocean swim." this was greeted by many groans, gasps and refusals, but after a few quick games of tags, and a quick pep talk we were ready to go! "Togs on" and leaping off the pier/deck.I won't lie the water was ABSOLUTELY FREEZING, but I don't regret it! Was so much fun at the same time, and I wouldn't say no again! Drying off took no time at all and we were on our way to the top of the dormant volcano. And hour long trail seemed to take much longer with our inquisitive leads off road, through lava caves, and to look at local flora, fauna and birdlife. After a long last steep section we were there! I was so warm at the top, but I cannot believe how worth it the hike was! The most glorious views were visible in each and every single direction. This afternoon saw us return after a quick lunch (having stowed our food in a nearby bush to the pier on the island) and the beginning of our race. Set out like a scavenger hunt/treasure hunt, saw us traversing the city for checkpoints and information. Fulfilling 20 out of 21 questions, only missing out on a photograph with the police, we were the clear winners and can now say we have busked in Auckland, and know much more about cultures such as meat pies, flat whites and the Americas cup! After this, only time for dinner - pesto pasta - a brief for tomorrow and a quick chat, now bed! Absolutely shattered and wanting to be raring to go for our trip to the Bay if Islands tomorrow to begin our first volunteering week!
